Another big day for Indian women's cricket has come. Today, the country's biggest companies officially joined the race to buy a Women's Indian Premier League (WIPL) team. IPL team owners Adanis, Ambanis, Glazer family are among 20 other companies that have opted for WIPL Team Tenders. Interested parties have submitted technical offers, which have been rejected by CSK, GT and LSG. Financial offers will be made on Wednesday. Experts estimate that the team's sales are between 500 to 600 crore.
More than 30 businesses have entered the competition to own a franchise, and the BCCI is anticipating a huge windfall. All 10 IPL franchises as well as other businesses will be competing to own a WIPL team, which will consist of 5 teams in its inaugural season. Companies like Haldiram, Infosys, Shriram Group, the owners of Manchester United, Adanis, and all 10 IPL team owners are among those with an interest.
Apart from well-known brands, Mumbai-based Route Mobile has also picked bid documents. Route Mobile is one of the leading cloud communication platform providers. The company has roped in former England captain Kevin Peterson and West Indies legend Sir Viv Richards to lay the foundation for the women's team.
Along with the new participants, the defending IPL champions Gujarat Titans, Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Punjab Kings have all stated that they will be competing for WIPL Teams. For a ten-year period (2023–2022), bids will be accepted with no base price set.
According to reports, Indian snack and restaurant company Haldirams has also indicated a desire to buy the Women's IPL team. Just a few days before the January 21 deadline, Haldirams picked up the document. ITTs have been on the market for a five lakh rupee non-refundable fee.
Ten Indian cities and venues were listed by the BCCI for the event, allowing one side to submit a bid for more than one city.
On Wednesday, January 25, the BCCI will open the sealed bids and announce the franchise winner.
BCCI has indicated March as WIPL's window for the competition. Although BCCI is yet to officially announce the dates for the inaugural season, it is expected to start around March 5 and end around March 23.
