All eyes are on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but the IPL 2023 franchise is gearing up for the next season. While some teams have started training, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals will have to sort out their captaincy issues first. With Rishabh Pant ruled out of IPL 2023, DC need a new captain and more importantly a defender. SRH have limited captaincy options and based on Aiden Markram's success in SA20, they will name the next SRH captain in the next 15 days.
More than IPL, Pant is a big miss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. The young man aroused respect with his abilities in Australia, India, South Africa and England. But Delhi Capitals have to choose their captain and also a wicket keeper. Pant was in a terrible car accident and is out for almost 9 months.
However, DC shot itself in the foot by releasing KS Bharat. As a result, DC does not have an Indian wicket-keeper on its roster. The only keeper they have is Phil Salt. However, he's not a first-choice keeper either.
Who will be Delhi Capital captain?
David Warner is the leading contender for the IPL 2023 alternate captaincy. Manish Pandey is also a possibility. But given Warner's status in the team, he will be the next captain. DC commissioner Sourav Ganguly and head coach Ricky Ponting will confirm the next captain in a few weeks.
Who will be Sunrisers Hyderabad captain?
Sunrisers Hyderabad have two captaincy options, Mayank Agarwal and Aiden Markram. Mayank's tenure was unsuccessful as the Punjab Kings captain was sacked. Markram, on the other hand, has successfully managed the SRH SA20 franchise. His performance as captain will be judged by the SA20 final scheduled for Saturday. Sunrisers Eastern Cape are still in contention for semi-final qualification.
The other captaincy option for SRH is Bhuvneshwar Kumar. In the absence of Kane Williamson or David Warner, he has taken the lead. However, his position isn't guaranteed either given that he has also had injury problems. Because of this, Markram is the favorite to lead SRH. After the SA20 final on Saturday, a final announcement is likely to be made.
